Four Days of All-Things Surf

Love surfing and the culture that comes with it? Oceanside has a four-day festival for you.

It’s a good thing it feels like summer, because Oceanside is having the this weekend, starting today.

The fourth annual California Surf Festival is a four-day affair that boasts live musical entertainment, film premieres, plenty of exhibits and of course, surfing. Each day of the festival has something special planned and there will be appearances by today’s top surf pros and legends. Thursday: ‘Bring Your Mighty Uke Night’

  • The ukulele is a symbol of surf culture. See a documentary about the uke phenomenon then jam with other guitarists afterward. Bill Tapia and Pat Enos will be playing their ukuleles and invite you to join them. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m.

Friday: ‘Chicks Who Rip Night!’

  • It’s a night of feature films by, for and about the ladies of surf. Footage of some of the hottest women surfers on the water today will be previewed, including the documentary Oceanides, which will be sponsored by Keep a Breast Foundation.  The ladies night begins at 6 p.m.

Saturday: ‘Surf Cinema’

  • It’s an all-day surf movie fest. Movies that have made big waves, like Chasing the Swell, Surprise Excitement Party and Lost and Found will be shown throughout the day. There will be various receptions before and after the movies. Movies start showing at 1 p.m.

Sunday: ‘Silver Sunday’

  • The Surf Festival will close with a filmmakers contest on Sunday. Kids 18 and under were invited to make a short action sports film no longer than five minutes. The best films will screen and a panel of judges will present awards to the films. In past years, some winners have gone on to be hired by some of the largest surf companies in the world to make films.  The short films and awards start at 1 p.m. Silver Surfer Award recipient and San Diego’s legendary surfer and shaper, Skip Frye, will be recognized at 5 p.m.
