POLICE: Girl Killed by Truck Darted Into Traffic

A girl police say was 7 years old was struck by a Toyota Tundra Sunday and died later at a hospital, police said.

The crash was reported just before 2 p.m. on Mission Avenue, about 200 yards west of Ocean Pointe Avenue, according to Oceanside police Sgt. Ignacio Lopez.

The child was with her family, waiting to cross Mission Avenue, according to police officials, when she darted out into traffic.

The driver of the Tundra pulled over and waited for emergency services to arrive. Oceanside firefighter medics took the girl to FD arrived and the child was taken to Tri- City Medical Center by ambulance. The child died at 2:30 pm.

According to the sergeant, the Toyota Tundra was traveling west in the far left lane of Mission Ave.

The 82-year-old driver, Richard White Sr., observed the group and began to slow down. White said he did not see the child -- she was shielded by a male adult when she suddenly ran out in front of his vehicle.

He was unable to stop or take evasive action to avoid striking her, Lopez said.

Neither Speed nor alcohol were factors in this crash, Lopez said.
