Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Buena Vista Lagoon is getting funds to restore three acres of the 220-acre lagoon that creates the natural border between Oceanside and Carlsbad. The Buena Vista Audubon Society received a grant from the Dorrance Family to bring back native habitat and wildlife in the lagoon. Natalie Shapiro, executive director of the Buena Vista Audubon Society, said, "SANDAG has taken the lead on restoring the lagoon. Because the lagoon is blocked off from the ocean it has become choked with cattails and filled with sediment, which is what SANDAG will restore." Shapiro added, "Right now, the habitat is in really poor condition. There are mainly invasive weeds, there is a lot of erosion, and a lot of debris. We want to restore it for the wildlife, but also the community." (CBS News 8)
  2. They are a huge draw and loved by locals and tourists alike, but the Oceanside Harbor sea lions are a big pain for local boat owners. Seems that despite having their own private platform, many of the sea lions prefer the boat docks in the harbor. Michael Milstein, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the agency in charge of the protection of marine mammals and protected species, said "anything that could lead to their death is off limits. But people have tried putting up rails in places, using water hoses and paint balls. And some cases have been effective." (KPBS)
  3. The City of Oceanside released an update on the impacts of Measure X, the 1/2 cent sales tax that began in 2019. The list of projects benefiting from the funding includes roadwork expansion and improvements, construction of the new Fire Station 1, a new EMT program, youth development programs to reduce gangs, and new public safety equipment. Get the scoop on how the Measure X revenue is being put to work throughout Oceanside. (City Of Oceanside)
