Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- Oceanside has a new planning commissioner to fill the spot left by Jolene Haynes, who recently moved out of state. The city council talked to eight applicants before appointing retired Marine and local business owner John Malik to serve out the term. Malik will finish a term that expires April 15, 2025, and restores the commission to its full seven members. "A 20-year Oceanside resident, Malik formerly served as chief of staff at Camp Pendleton, where he helped develop and manage the base master plan for infrastructure, environmental impacts and water management." (Subscription/The San Diego Union-Tribune)
- Like many cities in our area, Oceanside struggles with a range of homeless issues on a daily basis. The Regional Task Force on Homelessness released its initial report, but will it make a difference? According to the report released Wednesday, "Thousands of affordable and supportive housing units are needed to reduce the homeless population in San Diego County. Along with the more than 9,000 units needed, also required are hundreds of new shelter beds," the report found. The task force's Community Action Plan "sets broad goals over the next five years, such as ending veteran, youth, family and senior homelessness and reducing the total unsheltered population by half." (Patch)
- Heading north to Orange County could be a problem today. President Joe Biden is headed to the OC as part of a three-day trip to SoCal, and traffic is expected to be horrendous: "Commuters are being warned to expect delays across major Southern California-area freeways." Biden is winding up his visit in Irvine with a discussion on "lowering costs for American families," according to the White House. "White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Wednesday Biden's appearances in Orange County and Oregon will highlight 'his efforts to lower prescription drug costs, protect Medicare and strengthen Social Security.' " (Patch)
