Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The 21st anniversary of IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside is coming up this weekend with over 3600 Athletes set to compete in the grueling swim, bike, run competition. The course starts with a 1.2-mile swim that begins on the beach and ends up in the Oceanside Harbor. The 56-mile bike route starts from Oceanside Harbor thru Camp Pendleton & San Onofre Bluffs State Park and back to the Harbor. The two-loop, 13.1-mile run course begins at Transition above the Oceanside Pier, down onto the Harbor, on The Strand and through coastal neighborhoods before a spectacular finish. 2. Oceanside has the second-largest homeless population in North County, but it's just now preparing to build its first shelter. Without a shelter to turn to, other homelessness prevention organizations often had to coordinate with shelters outside of the city for help with housing homeless individuals. Leilani Hines, director of Oceanside's Housing & Neighborhood Services department, said the city only now is in a financial position to move forward with the shelter after the city received $2.25 million to convert an old high school building into a proper homeless shelter. (Voice of San Diego)
  3. Following days of record-breaking heat a spring storm is bringing some much-needed rain to the area with expected rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Accompanying the rain are gusty winds and high surf, according to the National Weather Service. Large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet with local sets to 10 feet are expected in southern San Diego County. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  4. New Village Arts and Oceanside Theatre Company's new co-production of Sondheim's musical "Into the Woods" is such a pleasure. The staging that opened Saturday at the Sunshine Brook Theatre in Oceanside is effortlessly breezy, funny and well-sung, with some fresh directorial touches by Kristianne Kurner that bring new life to the show that made its world premiere at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in December 1986. James Lapine's libretto is about famous fairy tale characters who achieve their happily-ever-afters by intermission, only to discover in the musical's second act that real life is no fantasy. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
  5. A new cost of living analysis by porch.com, the home improvement and home-buying website, found San Diego to be the third least affordable region in the country among large metro areas where overall cost of living is concerned. "San Diego's become so unaffordable and the whole county at this point. It's just getting unbearable for some people," said Oceanside resident Brian Mahon. (CBS News 8)
