Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Get ready for Opening Night at the theatre! Oceanside Theatre Company (OTC) presents "Bye Bye Birdie" (Young Performer Edition) at the historic Brooks Theater in downtown Oceanside from August 5-7. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. A delightful musical featuring 32 local youth performers from across North County, "Bye Bye Birdie" is the story of a small town rocked by the presence of pop star and heart throb Conrad Birdie. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and are available online at www.oceansidetheatre.org or by calling the box office at 760-433-8900. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. Two local groups have appealed the recent approval of Ocean Kamp, a proposed resort with hotel, restaurants, shops and up to 700 homes to be built around an artificial surf lagoon near Route 76 at Foussat Road. The appeals by Preserve Calavera and San Diegans for Sustainable, Economic and Equitable Development (SD SEED) will send the Oceanside Planning Commission's decision to the City Council. Preserve Calavera President Diane Nygaard stated in the appeal letter that Oceanside has one of the lowest jobs-to-housing ratios in San Diego County. Building more homes means more people will drive farther to work, increasing traffic, pollution and greenhouse gases. The appeal is expected to go on a City Council agenda in the next few months. (San Diego Union Tribune)
  3. A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week for the new Oceanside Fire Station 1 Project site at 602 Civic Center Drive. Funding from Measure X is supplying the project's major design and construction costs. The city also received a $3.5 million federal Defense Community Infrastructure Program grant for this project – one of only 13 projects selected nationwide. This station will also serve downtown and neighboring jurisdictions when assistance is needed. (Coast News)
  4. Cococabana is now open on the 2,100 square-foot rooftop of the restored The Brick Hotel. Besides incredible views of downtown Oceanside all the way to the ocean, the Caribbean-style cocktail bar serves an eclectic menu of tropical small bites. Its menu ranges from Coconut Curry Clams and Wagyu Skewers to plant-based bar bites like Roasted Wild Mushrooms and Chargrilled Cauliflower. Sister concept, Q&A Oyster Bar and Restaurant is set to open later this month on the ground floor adjacent to the hotel lobby. (There San Diego)
  5. A first-degree murder conviction of a man who shot and killed his wife in Vista was upheld by an appeals court panel Wednesday. Andrew Thomas Smith, 61, was convicted by a Vista jury last year for the April 13, 2019, shooting death of Jean Moore Smith, 59, and later sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison. While a three-justice panel of the Fourth District Court of Appeal rejected Smith's arguments to reduce his conviction to either second-degree murder or voluntary manslaughter, they ruled he is entitled to a possible re- sentencing, in which a judge could rule to strike a firearm enhancement that added a 25-years-to-life term to his sentence.
