Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. A man was killed while changing a tire on SR-78 near the Oceanside/Vista border. He was struck by a suspected DUI driver on Sunday morning. CHP identified 22-year-old Isabella Herrera from Oceanside as the driver who hit the man, who has not been identified. Herrera was arrested after an impairment check, on charges of felony driving under the influence (DUI) and gross vehicular manslaughter. "The person who called 911 to report the crash told dispatchers that the situation was 'dire' and they needed help, before disconnecting the call." (CBS 8 San Diego)
  2. The Crown Heights Community Resource Center is getting a makeover. Built in 1931 and designed by renowned architect Irving J. Gill, the facility with its distinctive domed roof is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Located behind Oceanside High School, the center assists residents with issues related to healthcare, mental health needs, social services, legal needs regarding fair housing and safety concerns. The rehabilitation project will be split into three phases, with the last to begin in the summer of 2024. (City of Oceanside)
  3. The North River Farms project continues to stir controversy, after the Oceanside City Council recently approved two special tax districts to help fund public improvements. Despite pushback from the community, the project was approved in 2019, followed by a 2020 voter referendum that revoked the council's approval and eventually resulted in a Superior Court judge invalidating the referendum in 2021. Deputy Mayor Ryan Keim joined Mayor Esther Sanchez and voted against the North River Farms development."When this project came forward, we were told repeatedly that it's not gonna cost the general fund any money… it puts the city in a difficult position now," Keim said. "I'm not very happy about it." (Coast News)
