OCEANSIDE, CA — A U.S. Marine recruit with Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, climbs "Basilone's Hill" during the crucible at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Sept. 14, 2021. The recruits had been given ammunition cans to resupply a friendly force at the top of the hill as part of this event. The crucible involves many physically and mentally demanding events the recruits must overcome in order to earn the title of United States Marine.

The drill instructors designated numerous recruits as simulated casualties during this event forcing the remaining recruits to work through the chaos in order to succeed. The crucible is a 54-hour culminating event which ends with the remaining recruits receiving their Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.

The recruits buddy rushed up the hill and proceeded to set security after arriving to the top. The hill, known as "Basilone's Hill" is named after Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone in honor of his actions during the battle of Guadalcanal which eventually earned him the Medal Of Honor.
