Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- MiraCosta College is celebrating a first for the Oceanside-based community college. Student Luis De Luna was selected as a DREAM Scholar by Achieving the Dream. The prestigious honor is awarded annually to no more than eight students from around the country. De Luna and the other DREAM Scholars will be recognized for their achievements next month in Chicago. "I, and a lot of people I know who were unsure of what they wanted to do or where they wanted to go or who they wanted to be, came out of MiraCosta with a strong sense of direction," De Luna said. (Times of San Diego)
- Camp Pendleton is known for conservation efforts on the base, but Master Sgt. Zachariah Spitzer took those efforts overseas when he helped save a critically endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtle. Spitzer is assigned to the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267 (HMLA-267) based out of Camp Pendleton and he is currently deployed to Okinawa. Thanks to his volunteer efforts with the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach, Spitzer knew just what to do when he spotted the severely injured sea turtle caught in a fishing net on the beach. After carefully working to free the turtle, he turned it over to the Churamura Okinawa Sea Turtle Conservation. (Press Release Desk)
- Celebrate Oceanside's Black History on Saturday at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre. "Generational Black Pioneers - Featuring Oceanside Entrepreneurs" is an interactive multi-media exploration that celebrates Black entrepreneurs in Oceanside. The production is a collaboration between Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Board Member Rushell Gordon and Kristi Hawthorne of the Oceanside Historical Society. The stories of Biddy Mason, Charles Tapsico, Charles Etta Reece and other Oceanside residents are featured in this creative theatre piece. (Coast News)
