Missing Swimmer Found Dead Near Oceanside Harbor Beach

A man died of an apparent drowning near the Oceanside Pier, authorities said.

OCEANSIDE, CA — A man died of an apparent drowning near the Oceanside Pier, authorities said.

Lifeguards and police responded around 4:30 a.m. Saturday to a report of a missing man last seen swimming in the ocean shortly after 4 a.m., according to the Oceanside Fire Department. Crews searched the area using pier vantage points, surveillance cameras and watercraft but suspended the search around 5:30 a.m. after failing to find him.

At about 10:50 a.m., lifeguards found an unresponsive man in the water near Lifeguard Tower 12 at Oceanside Harbor Beach. He matched the description of the missing person, officials said.

The man was pulled from the water and given CPR before he was taken to Tri-City Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim was believed to be the man who was reported missing earlier near the pier. His identity was not released.
