Happy Sunday, Oceanside-Camp Pendleton! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start off on an informed note on this second day of 2022.
First, today's weather:
Plenty of sunshine, but cool. High: 62 Low: 35.
Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- Oceanside Economic News: While 2021 held many challenges for the business community there were many new businesses that opened and major projects completed, which added jobs and helped maintain a robust economy, despite the pandemic. Take a look back at the Economic Development News for 2021 from the City of Oceanside. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- The Oceanside Pier View Way pedestrian bridge upgrade options will be presented to the Oceanside Historic Preservation Advisory Commission at its meeting Tuesday. "The Pier View Way Bridge ... is in need of significant long-term major structural upgrades," states a memo from Senior Civil Engineer Darra Woods to the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
- San Diego's minimum wage increased from $14 to $15 Saturday, in accordance with the city's Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance. The minimum wage in Oceanside, along with the rest of California is also increased on Saturday to $14 per hour for employers with 25 or fewer employees and $15 per hour for employers with 26 or more employees. On Jan. 1, 2023, the minimum wage for employers with 25 or fewer employees also raises to $15 per hour. (City News Service)
- California Coastal Commission upheld the City of Oceanside's approval of a three-story, four-unit, beachfront vacation rental condo building after residents appealed the decision. The commission also asked the developer to build more condos, additional parking, a better position for the building to improve public views of the ocean, and for the developer to prepare the ground-floor garage for occasional flooding. The appellants, led by longtime South Oceanside resident Carolyn Krammer, had hoped to preserve the nine single-story bungalows built in 1931 at the corner of Pacific and Hayes streets. "The look of the new building will be a big change for the neighborhood going from the bungalows to more of the same that exists on Pacific Street," she said by email. "The bungalows will now be just another part of Oceanside that has been bulldozed and memorialized in history books." (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
- A man is dead after being pushed in front of an oncoming train in San Diego early Saturday morning, police said. The incident was reported just after 6:15 a.m. at the Old Town Trolley station, according to Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department. (San Diego Patch)
