Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- Two local groups have filed appeals to the recent approval of Ocean Kamp by the Oceanside Planning Commission. The project is a giant mixed-use development anchored by a resort and wave lagoon located on the corner of Foussat Road and State Route 76 on a 92-acre vacant parcel. The first appeal argues the city failed to comply with California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requirements, violated the city's subdivision ordinance and other state and local land use laws. The second appeal claims the project failed to evaluate the jobs-to-housing ratio and challenged the issue of water supply regarding the wave lagoon. The Oceanside City Council will determine the fate of Ocean Kamp at a later date. (Coast News)
- Barbells on the Beach is a first-time event coming to Oceanside on August 20. The event will showcase the brute strength of weightlifting and the physical toughness of Crossfit. "The main reason for this is to bring people together, get people outside and spread the word of weightlifting and Crossfit to the community. We want to get more people involved," said Pacifico Barbell Club Coach Isaac Cruz. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
- Privateer Coal Fire Pizza in Oceanside joins 26 other county restaurants recognized by Wine Spectator in 2022 . It took Susan Porter-Guarino, the wine and beverage director of Privateer months of preparation and hours of computer time to submit her application for the award.
Privateer is, cheekily, the only casual restaurant in the county represented on this year's list. For those unfamiliar, one side is a sit-down pizza place with wines by the glass and an outdoor patio, while its airy marketplace next door is stocked with bottles of wine. It also plays host to a popular Tuesday comedy night, live music on Wednesdays and offers a wine club. Porter-Guarino's wine list focuses on value and regional variety. (San Diego Magazine) - The American Red Cross is encouraging donors to "pump up the blood supply" and keep it from falling to shortage levels in August. Anyone who donates blood or platelets through Aug. 31 will be entered for a chance to win free gas for a year, a $6,000 value, according to the Red Cross. There will be three winners. Donors will also receive a $10 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice. Red Cross blood drives are taking place across San Diego County including five in Oceanside between Aug 11 - Aug 25.
