Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- The Oceanside Planning Commission unanimously approved the Ocean Kamp project slated for the old drive-in site on Highway 76 and Foussat in Oceanside. The adventure-themed resort and community to be built around an artificial surf lagoon, received approval Monday. The project brings a new era to the 92-acre site. Opponents said the resort will waste water and increase traffic congestion, while supporters said it will boost the city's reputation as a surfing destination and bring millions of dollars annually in tax revenue. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
- Oceanside City Councilman, Christopher Rodriguez made the surprise announcement that he will not run for a second term as Oceanside's District 2 city councilman. According to a recent San Diego Reader article, Rodriguez says the only way he would change his mind and run again is if Fire Chief Rick Robinson changes his mind and decides not to run. Robinson is retiring on July 29 and has announced he will run for the District 2 seat which covers the northeast quadrant of Oceanside. "When I heard that Rick was running, that was when I decided to pull out," says Rodriguez who says he thinks the fire chief is suited for the job. "I am endorsing Rick Robinson." The deadline to file for all city offices for the November election is August 12 at 4 p.m. Districts 1 and 2 are up for election. (San Diego Reader)
- San Diego Humane Society is waiving adoption fees for all animals through the end of July. The "Summer is Cooler with a Pet" promotion is for all adoptable bird species, livestock, dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and small pets. The CHP responded to a road rage call around 5:50 a.m. south of Rainbow Valley Boulevard on southbound I-15, the agency reported. A 57-year-old Murrieta man said he was driving a blue Dodge Ram in the #3 lane when someone in a silver Mercedes CLK230C coupe fired a shot at him and sped off.
