Here are the top four stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- The City of Oceanside released its annual report this week with an ensemble of highlights, accomplishments and initiatives in 2021. While the pandemic caused some of the city's operations to be modified and some infrastructure projects to be delayed due to supply or staffing issues, many key projects were still accomplished. - Coronavirus numbers in California have fallen almost back to levels observed before omicron became the state's dominant variant, the latest COVID-19 infections and hospitalization data show. The daily case rate has cratered to 30 per 100,000 residents, according to a Tuesday update from the California Department of Public Health, one-tenth the peak of 300 per 100,000 on Jan. 10. CDPH reported statewide test positivity at 3.6% Tuesday, down substantially from 22.6% at the omicron peak. (Sacramento Bee)
- The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce hosted the February Rising Star student recognition program for the 2021/2022 school year at the El Camino Country Club last week. Mayor Esther Sanchez began the program by congratulating the students for overcoming their individual challenges. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- Corporal Johao Miguel Chavarri, a 25-year-old Camp Pendleton-based Marine, has been charged with cyberstalking and harassing young women after he demanded sexual photos and videos online in a sextortion scandal. If the girls did not comply with his wishes, Chavarri would threaten them, effectively coercing them to send these nude and sexually explicit photographs and videos. (SOFREP)
