Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Oceanside paid out nearly $150,000 in settlements in 2021 to compensate people for things ranging from damaged fences and bicycles to business losses and job termination, according to information disclosed under a Public Records Act request. More than 80 claims were filed in Oceanside in 2021, according to the city's records. However, only 33 settlements were awarded during the year, and some of those were multiple awards to the same party. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
  2. A former Camp Pendleton Marine who sexually assaulted a 3-year-old was sentenced Monday to more than 28 years in prison. Michael Hamby Jr., 30, must also register as a sex offender following his guilty plea to a federal enticement of a minor count. Prosecutors say that in addition to molesting the victim, Hamby also "advertised the child as available to others and expressed an intent to engage in sexual games with two other children, ages 4 and 8." (City News Service)
  3. The San Diego County Office of Emergency Services is asking County residents to provide feedback for two emergency plans. The survey feedback will be incorporated into the Operational Area Emergency Operations Plan and the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. These plans cover hazards like earthquakes, flooding, fires, tsunamis and even terrorist attacks. One of the plans also identifies risks and goals to minimize impacts from natural and human-caused disasters. Both plans were last revised in 2018 and are currently being reviewed to reflect changes in current operations and capabilities. (County of San Diego)
  4. The median-priced California home crossed the $120,000 mark for the first time in 1985, a year in which most baby boomers were in their 30s. As their children reached that same milestone in 2022, homeownership for many simply isn't within reach. Home prices have seen a considerable rise nationally over the last two decades, according to new research from Anytime Estimate. In California, prices shot up 277 percent since 2000, the largest increase in the U.S. (San Diego Patch)
  5. Oceanside is updating its General Plan, a roadmap for growth over the next 30 years. But residents see a red light in the city's proposal to allow more homes in South Morro Hills, an area long dominated by commercial agriculture. "South Morro Hills is the elephant in the room," said Oceanside Principal Planner Russ Cunningham in a recent presentation to the city's Planning Commission. The region includes about 3,500 acres or 5.5 square miles in the city's northeast quadrant, an area dominated by farming for nearly a century. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
