Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- Many people yearn for a return to happier days and feel that the best days are behind them. But according to a new study by WalletHub, where you live has a lot to do with your outlook and level of happiness. So how happy is Oceanside? While Oceanside did not crack the top 20 we came in at number 33 out of 180 cities, making Oceanside way above the average happiness level. Oceanside scored the highest in the area of Emotional & Physical Well-Being, while the lowest score was for Income & Employment. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- Two vacancies and some absences on the seven-member Oceanside Planning Commission made it difficult to get a quorum in February, delaying several projects that need the commission's recommendation or approval. A conditional use permit application by ChemStation Pacific was among the items pushed back. The company plans to open a storage facility in an industrial building on North Avenue, near Oceanside Boulevard and Melrose Avenue. Some Oceanside residents oppose the project because of the hazardous chemicals that would be kept there, and social media posts have urged people to speak when the application is presented to the Planning Commission. - American Legion Post #91 hosted military personnel this week for an Active Duty Reconnect event. The American Legion brought four active-duty personnel and two of their wives, two Air Force couples from Fort Lewis, Washington, and two Marines from Camp Pendleton, California. Retired military and organizer Chris Kurinec said the goal was to strengthen the bonds of military brotherhood across time. "The whole mountain is open to them," Kurinec said. "Folks at Lost Trail helped us with the lift tickets. Local vendors have provided everything." (Ravalli Republic)
- On Saturday, John S. Garcia watched the 100th-anniversary celebration of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. It was his first visit since 1968 to MCRD, where he trained before being sent to Vietnam. Since then, staying connected to fellow Marines has become a saving grace. "Once you get out of the Marine Corps, it's important to stay in touch with other Marines," Garcia told Times of San Diego. (Times of San Diego)
- A man in Southern California faces charges including attempted murder after he was accused of swinging a stolen aluminum baseball bat at a police officer's head on Friday, authorities said. Julian Sebastien Kurko, 26, was approached by Walmart loss prevention employees after they reportedly witnessed him attempting to steal sporting goods. Employees of the El Cajon store called law enforcement around 3:40 p.m. after failing to make contact with Kurko. (San Diego Patch)
