Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. It was another busy news week across California. Missed the headlines on Patch?
Whether you're looking for breaking or bizarre news, or sweet or silly features, we've rounded up some of the most share-worthy stories from the past week. Take a look at some of this week's top news stories from across the state. Three COVID treatment options are now available in California — antibodies, antivirals. California to ban the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035. Police say TikTok trend may have inspired shootings in Banning, Beaumont. An accused child killer is among 19 migrants rescued in Redondo Beach. A missing California teen and her vehicle was pulled from a reservoir. (Patch)
  2. The Oceanside City Council approved a plan this week to rezone 25.6 acres along North River Road from industrial to residential, but with a concession to reduce the number of houses built on the site. The council reduced the cap to 15.1 per acre for the developer's proposed maximum of 16.8 homes per acre. That lowered the limit from 400 to 359 homes, though in some cases the total could be more. Under state law, the builders could add accessory dwelling units on the lots or include homes reserved for low-income residents that would allow them to exceed the number of homes set by the city's zoning. Mayor Esther Sanchez cast the only vote against the rezone, saying the slight reduction in density would still allow too many houses in an area that's not prepared for the population increase. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
  3. Violent crime and homicide rates in California spiked in 2021, while the total arrest rate decreased, according to the state's annual crime report. The report revealed that homicides increased 7.2 percent from the previous year. That rate is "significantly" below the state's historical high of 4,095 homicides in 1993, the state's attorney general's office said. The report showed that three-fourths of all homicides in California involved a firearm and more than eight in 10 of the victims were men. Half of people killed were Hispanic and about 30 percent were Black. About 40 percent were killed by strangers, 40 percent by friends or acquaintances and the rest by a relative. According to the report, more than half of female victims were killed in homes while more than 40 percent of male victims died on the street. (Patch)
  4. An active police investigation is underway into an 'eyesore' Oceanside home. While the paint job on the exterior of the Creekside Estates home is an eyesore for many neighbors, more serious concerns are mounting for the underage teens who are being allowed to stay there. Angelo Pamintuan is the renter behind the paint job on the front of the house, which he sees as art. CBS 8 spoke with Pamintuan, who goes by "AP." He said that that he is turning the rental into a place of worship. "I opened my house," Pamintuan said. "It's a home, it's a church, it's a home church." A 'church for artists' which Pamintuan said he has opened to young people, as many as 20 at one time: many of them runaways, some of them underage. (CBS News 8)
  5. Local students are back or will soon be heading back to school, and county health officials are encouraging parents to make sure they get the recommended COVID-19 vaccines to prevent the spread of the virus. The most recent data from the County Health and Human Services Agency shows the percentage of local children who have received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine:
    • 9.1% of children between 6 months and 4 years of age
    • 47.3% of children between 5 and 11 years old
    • 85.5% of children between 12 and 17 years of age
In comparison, 89.5% of San Diegans between 18 and 64 years old have received at least one COVID-19 dose. The percentage is even higher for people over 65 years of age: 99.9%. (Press Release Desk)
