Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. If your Memorial Day plans include a trip to the beach, be on alert: the National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Oceanside and the entire San Diego and Orange County Coastal areas. The alert starts Sunday at 2 p.m. and continues through Tuesday at 9 p.m. Elevated surf of 5 to 8 feet is expected, along with a high risk of strong rip currents that will create dangerous swimming conditions.   2. The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce hosted the final Rising Star student recognition program for the 2021/2022 school year at the William A. Wagner Aquatic Center earlier this week. Half of this school year's Rising Stars received at least $1,000 in higher education scholarships provided by Oceanside Chamber of Commerce members Genentech and Tri-City Medical Center.   3. The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library named the winners, runners-up and honorable mentions for its 2nd annual Amateur Photography Contest. The theme for this year's competition was, Capturing the City: Urban Life. The images will be displayed at the Oceanside Civic Center and Mission Branch Libraries, at Jane and Evie's Used Books, the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library bookstore and featured on the contest website.   4. Oceanside's Top Gun House continues to make waves including an article in Variety to coincide with the release of "Top Gun: Maverick," movie this weekend. Looks like more than just the locals are excited to revisit the San Diego area and see the cottage made famous in the original 1986 movie. (Variety)
  5. A woman who repeatedly punched a flight attendant on a San Diego-bound plane was sentenced Friday to 15 months in federal custody. Vyvianna Quinonez, 29, of Sacramento, pleaded guilty last year to a federal count of interfering with flight crew members and attendants for striking a Southwest Airlines flight attendant on a May 23, 2021, flight from Sacramento to San Diego. The victim suffered injuries that included three chipped teeth, a bruised left eye, a cut under her eye requiring stitches and bruising on her arm, according to court documents. (San Diego Patch)
