Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. The San Diego County Vector Control Program (VCP) will conduct its fifth routine aerial mosquito-fighting larvicide application on ten different Oceanside waterways this coming Wednesday and Thursday. Granules of larvicide will be applied via helicopter to specific waterways known to breed mosquitoes throughout the San Diego region to reduce mosquito breeding and decrease the risk of West Nile virus (WNV) transmission. The larvicide consists of naturally occurring bacteria that target mosquito larvae but are safe for people, pets, plants and wildlife. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. The California Coastal Commission will consider an appeal of Oceanside's beach revetment project. The Surfrider Foundation and other environmental groups filed the appeal after the Oceanside Planning Commission voted unanimously in March to approve the project. The plan is to rebuild a two-block-long rock revetment on the beach along South Pacific Street. The Coastal Commission agreed with staffers who said there is a "substantial issue" with the project in a number of areas, such as how the proposed work would affect sand on the beach, maintain public access, and more. Studies show that over the long-term such structures do more environmental harm than good, increasing erosion and shrinking beaches. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  3. Oceanside was listed among the top beach trips in the US by the Washington Post. Henley Vazquez, travel adviser and co-founder of the travel agency Fora, called it "the last original, quintessential surf town in San Diego County." Vazquez recommended going to the city's biggest public beach, Harbor Beach, for beach volleyball, picnicking, water sports and "stunning panoramic views." Beyond the beach, Oceanside has a thriving art and food scene. (Washington Post)
  4. The continued increase in local coronavirus cases has prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to move San Diego County to its high-risk level for COVID-19. The number of people hospitalized with a coronavirus infection in San Diego County increased by five to 422, according to the latest state data released Saturday. ICU patients with COVID were up two from the previous day's total to 47. The county's hospitalization rate of 11.5 per 100,000 residents exceeded the CDC's threshold of 10 per 100,000 for "high" virus activity. (Press Release Desk)
  5. A person died in a crash Saturday on southbound I-5 through Camp Pendleton. The two-vehicle collision occurred at 2:09 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP said four or five vehicles were pulled over and people were trying to help the driver of a minivan. Traffic began to slow, while some vehicles used the right-hand shoulder to exit the freeway and bypass other vehicles. At 3:57 p.m., the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office was summoned to the scene.(Times of San Diego)
