Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. A man was shot in the neck in Oceanside on Monday near Balderrama Park . "Oceanside Police told ABC 10News that multiple 911 calls were made at around 2:15 a.m. regarding possible gunfire in an area near the Joe Balderrama Park & Recreation Center on San Diego Street. Responding officers were searching the vicinity when someone told them that a man with a bullet in his neck was down in an alley off Buena Street." The unidentified victim was taken to a hospital by helicopter and his condition is unknown. Nor has any info been released on a possible motive or even a suspect in the shooting. (ABC10NEWS)
  2. Plans for the Oceanside beachfront improvement project continue to draw strong feelings from locals, because "the years and the harsh marine environment have taken their toll on several of the city's favorite beachfront facilities, including the Junior Seau Beach Community Center, the pier amphitheater, the pier plaza and the bandshell." The Oceanside City Council authorized a feasibility study with architectural consultants Johnson Favaro, and the firm's "recommendations are scheduled to be presented at the council's Oct. 26 meeting." (San Diego Union-Tribune)
  3. The Tri-City Medical Campus in Oceanside broke ground on a new mental health facility on Monday, with local officials from the county on hand. "Estimated to open next year, the 16-bed, single-story facility — built by the county but staffed and operated by Tri-City — will be built in a parking lot on the northern edge of the Oceanside hospital's campus. Mental health care, it turns out, is the issue that can build bridges across political divides. County Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Jim Desmond attended Monday's ground-breaking, speaking warmly about each other's contributions to finding state and local money to build the new Tri-City facility."
