Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. A small brush fire that broke out late Friday morning in Oceanside is now contained, OPD says. Forward progress of the fire along the Sprinter route was stopped at the 4000 block of Oceanside Boulevard. Businesses that were asked earlier in the day to evacuate as a precaution were able to re-populate. Sprinter services were temporarily stopped in the area while air support assisted OFD with water drops. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
  2. Extreme and record temperatures were set in a few areas of San Diego County this week as a brutal heat wave continues to bear down on the Golden State. The heat wave began Monday, then intensified Tuesday and Wednesday. "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors," the National Weather Service advised. "Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances." Some of the highest temperatures on Friday were felt in Borrego Springs, 111 degrees; Ocotillo Wells, 111 degrees; Fallbrook, 101 degrees; Ramona, 99 degrees; Escondido, 97 degrees and Oceanside, 87 degrees. 3. Patch has rounded up fun, interesting and entertaining events throughout Southern California — from the southernmost part of San Diego, through Orange and Riverside counties, to the beaches and valleys in Los Angeles. Some are free. Some have a fee. Whether you opt for an activity close to home or a mini day trip, see what's slated this weekend from today to Sunday, Sept. 4. including the Julian Grape Stomp Festa at Menghini Winery, Family Fun Day at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center in Encinitas and more. (Patch)
  4. At the August meeting, the Oceanside Harbor and Beaches Advisory Committee moved to recommend changing the harbor safety plan to the city council. "This is going to be kind of a living and breathing plan," said City Manager Borrego in the meeting. "If certain things aren't working or can be done better or if there are certain elements that need tweaking, we are certainly willing to do that." The current police-based model was implemented in 2009 with eight officers and one sergeant providing 24-hour coverage of the harbor. The new proposed safety plan would rely on 24-hour coverage from a lifeguard-based unit with police available for emergency calls. (The Log)
