Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. The Oceanside Fire Department responded to a vegetation fire near the NCTD rail track behind 2542 Skylark on Wednesday morning. The origin of the fire was near the rail tracks so North County Transit District was notified to stop all rail traffic on the rail lines. Firefighting helicopters and a large number of fire engines and chief officers were ordered as soon as firefighters determined there was a danger to homes in the Skylark neighborhood to the South. Initial containment was achieved by 1130 am. The cause of the fire was determined to be of human origin. (FOX 5 San Diego)
  2. Times of San Diego's complete guide to fireworks displays, from Imperial Beach to Oceanside, and from Del Mar to Ramona, to celebrate Independence Day 2022. Most are free to the public, but you may have to pay for parking, get there very early or take public transit. Oceanside will host its annual fireworks at 9 p.m. on Sunday as a commemoration of Oceanside's incorporation on July 3, 1888. Gates open at 5 p.m. at SoCal Soccer Complex at El Corazon with live entertainment, a family fun area and food vendors before the fireworks. (Times of San Diego)
  3. Write On, Oceanside! has two writing contests open to residents even if they have never written more than a text. Try your hand at the 6 Word Story Contest or get inspired by the theme "Getting Through to the Other Side … in Oceanside," and write 500 words or less of poetry or prose. This year's 12th annual event is free to authors and the public, and will be in person at the Civic Center Plaza and Courtyard from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13. (OsideNews)
