Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- The City of Oceanside is forecasting a budget surplus of $1.32 million for the fiscal year 2023-24, starting in July. The city also projects modest surpluses each year through fiscal year 2027-28, with most of the revenue increases coming from property, sales and transient occupancy taxes. Financial services director Jill Moya presented the city's annual five-year financial forecast at last week's city council meeting. "We consider these projections to be conservative and align with our consultant's projections in the current year's revenue trends," Moya said. "This forecast assumes that we maintain current service levels and does not include any new programs." The city council unanimously accepted the five-year forecast. (Coast News)
- The story of Oceanside surfer, jewel thief and killer "Murf the Surf" is the topic of a new docuseries by MGM+ that premiered this week. Jack Roland Murphy was a good-looking, blue-eyed surf champion who was catapulted into the spotlight after being arrested for one of the biggest jewel robberies in history. Murphy spent three years in prison but after release, he did not learn his lesson, as he was later sentenced to life in prison for killing a woman. While in prison, Murphy taught Bible studies to other inmates until he was released on parole in 1986. His memoir "Jewels for the Journey" recounts his experiences. "Murf the Surf" died at 83 in 2020. (Daily Mail)
- Frida's Taqueria is opening a second North County restaurant in Oceanside. The new restaurant in Oceanside Plaza has a planned soft opening this month, followed by a grand opening celebration in March. Owners Gracy and Robert Ayala are regulars at the Oceanside Sunset Market, with a classic menu of Tijuana-style tacos, mulitas, burritos and quesatacos filled with classics like pollo asado (grilled chicken), birria (spicy stewed meat), carnitas (fried pork) and carne asada (grilled steak). - It's beginning to feel a lot like spring in Oceanside: Time to explore outdoor fun. The City of Oceanside Parks and Recreation department just released its Spring 2023 Activity Guide, chock full of recreation activities throughout our community. Check out "sports, aquatics, after-school programs, spring break camps, senior activities, events and more!" (Oceanside Rec via Twitter)
