Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The Metrolink commuter rail system, which has service running from Oceanside north to Los Angeles transitions to fully renewable fuel for its locomotives. "It's a proud achievement to be the first rail agency in the nation to use renewable fuel to move people around southern California," Metrolink board Chairman Ara Najarian said in a news release following an event celebrating the changeover. The change to vegetable- and natural fat-based fuel comes as Earth Day approaches on April 22. (OsideNews)
  2. Did you feel it? A magnitude 4.6 earthquake that struck south of the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday night was felt across San Diego County and in parts of Southern California. The earthquake was recorded at 9:30 p.m. Thursday about 40 miles south of Tijuana near El Sauzal, Baja California, Mexico, according to the United States Geological Survey. The strong quake lasted several seconds and shook buildings across San Diego County. (San Diego Patch)
  3. The city of Oceanside will put on an Earth Day of Service and Celebration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 23 with music and Earth Day activities at Buccaneer Park, including arts, crafts, and activities centered around sustainability and preserving the environment. There will be a local DJ and free retro "Stay Classy O'side" T-shirts provided by Waste Management, along with a community cleanup effort. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  4. Oceanside will restart its search for a contractor to build a new firehouse to replace the nearly 100-year-old Fire Station 1 across from City Hall in downtown Oceanside. Due to several contractor clerical errors in most of the proposals received in late February, the Oceanside City Council rejected five bids, which were between $12.4 million and $15.5 million, during its April 6 meeting. Due to the mistakes, staff and the city attorney's office decided to re-advertise the project, which has a total cost estimated between $16 million and $18.5 million. (Coast News)
  5. A former Camp Pendleton Marine who sexually assaulted a 3-year-old was sentenced Monday to more than 28 years in prison. Michael Hamby Jr., 30, must also register as a sex offender following his guilty plea to a federal enticement of a minor count. Prosecutors say that in addition to molesting the victim, Hamby also "advertised the child as available to others and expressed an intent to engage in sexual games with two other children, ages 4 and 8."
