Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- A San Diego-based design group known for its park designs throughout the county will draw up the first park site in El Corazon. The Oceanside City Council approved an agreement at the Feb. 23 meeting to pay Schmidt Design Group $476,360 to design El Corazon's Park Site 1 next to the new CaliFino Arena, which is still under construction and is set to be completed early next year. The city gained ownership of the vacant 465-acre El Corazon property, which was previously used as a sandpit, in 1994. Under the El Corazon Specific Plan, which was approved in 2009, El Corazon's 216 acres of designated parkland would be divided into nine different park sites."Many of the park sites are impacted by the SoCal Sports Complex, which is an interim use, so we will have to adapt and adjust over time as to how we're able to proceed with those other parks," said City Manager Deanna Lorson. - Gas prices across the state are still on the rise, smashing records each day. On Saturday, fuel stations in Los Angeles County were selling gasoline that eclipsed the $7 mark. In San Diego County the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline rose 11.1 cents Saturday to $5.215, one day after recording its largest daily increase since July 13, 2015, 12.9 cents, to top $5 for the first time. - One of San Diego's top signs of spring – rich, colorful blooms – are now on display in Carlsbad at the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. Current conditions in the fields, according to the website: "full of new growth as the ranunculus are blooming throughout the north-end!"
The Flower Fields includes nearly 50 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus, a flower renowned for the large, double-petaled blooms that sit atop tall, straight stems. Activities include tractor wagon rides, u-pick blueberries, American flag of flowers, The Artist Gardens, historic poinsettia display and demonstration garden. (Times of San Diego) - The "big one," a powerful earthquake that could devastate California at any moment, will likely kill thousands of people and topple buildings, crumble bridges and roads, sever water lines and ignite numerous fires. And "it could happen tomorrow," earthquake engineering expert Keith Porter told USA Today. "We don't know when," he told the newspaper. But "it will happen." The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that it's far more likely than not that an earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 will hit Los Angeles or the San Francisco Bay Area in the next 30 years: 60 percent and 72 percent, respectively.
