Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- SANDAG will get $10.5 million to extend the Inland Rail Trail that will span 21 miles between Oceanside and Escondido once finished. The money is earmarked "to build a Class 1 bikeway, pedestrian improvements at road crossings, fencing, lighting and a pocket park along that section of the Sprinter rail route. About half of the trail has been finished, with the next phase of construction to begin in 2023." Nearly 11 miles of completed segments are in Escondido, San Marcos, Vista and Oceanside. (paywall/The San Diego Union-Tribune)
- There are Marines and then there are Marine first-responders. When disasters or threats strike Camp Pendleton, it's these emergency teams who are sent in first. Preparing for any situation requires intense training and immersive teamwork. (DVIDS)
- The U-Haul office on S. Coast Highway got a surprise visit when a suspected DUI driver crashed into its building Sunday night. "After the collision, which occurred around 11 p.m., the driver allegedly backed up and fled the scene, but was only able to travel for three blocks before the vehicle became disabled, police said." (FOX5 News)
- San Diego County added flu testing to local COVID testing stations, including one in Oceanside. The seven county locations offer no-cost testing appointments and include walk-ins, though appointments are recommended. North Coastal Live Well Center at 3708 Ocean Ranch Blvd. in Oceanside is one of the only North County locations. For more information, hours of operation or to make an appointment, visit the county's COVID-19 website. (Press Release Desk)
