Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Tired of sweltering in this massive heat wave, Oceanside? Unfortunately, relief is not expected until the weekend. The National Weather Service has extended the Excessive Heat Warning for all of San Diego County. The extension will leave the Excessive Heat Warning in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday for the mountains and deserts and 8 p.m. Friday for the coast and valleys. Hot conditions with high temperatures ranging from 94 degrees and 115 degrees may be reached. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)

  2. The Red Cross is urging donors to get prepared for emergencies during National Preparedness Month, including donating blood or platelets. Anyone who donates blood or platelets between Sept. 1-18 will get a limited-edition Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last. People who donate in September will automatically be entered for a chance to win a VIP NASCAR experience, including two tickets to a 2023 race. Donors will also receive a coupon for a free haircut by email, courtesy of Sport Clips Haircuts. (Patch)

  3. More than 50 brush fires broke out in California over the last two days, killing four people and injuring several others fleeing the flames. Several firefighters were hospitalized with heat exhaustion while fighting flames in 100-plus-degree heat. Some 4,400 firefighters battled 14 large fires around the state, with 45 new blazes on Sunday alone, said Anale Burlew, a deputy chief with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Crews battled another 29 new brush fires across the state in a 24-hour period as of Tuesday afternoon. (Patch)
  1. The Oceanside Community Foundation held its annual Grant Awards Celebration last month at El Corazon. It awarded a total of $92,000 to seven local nonprofits that provide programs that support academic, social development and enrichment programs that help students living in Oceanside in grades K-12 make up for lost time. "We want to work with local organizations closest to our youth to ensure that as a community we're uplifting our young people academically, socially and emotionally," said Vince Alessi, Oceanside Community Foundation 2021-22 board chairman. The Oceanside foundation has granted more than $830,000 to over 60 programs since 2009. (Oside News)
  2. The County of San Diego anticipates receiving the new COVID-19 bivalent boosters early next week and beginning vaccinations shortly thereafter. The new bivalent boosters were developed to generate an immune response from the original COVID-19 virus and BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants. The Pfizer/BioNTech is for those age 12 and over, while the Moderna bivalent booster is for those age 18 and older. Individuals may contact their healthcare provider or other vaccine provider, such as a pharmacy, for other local availability. Availability at county vaccine events will be updated on coronavirus-sd.com and appointments can be made through the state's My Turn system. Initial supplies are expected to be limited.
