Good morning, Oceanside-Camp Pendleton! I'm here in your inbox this morning to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on around town — because community news matters! In today's issue, you'll find news about these stories and more:

  • Controversial South Morro Hills project plan reduced
  • Oceanside man dies in vehicle collision
  • Six-story downtown apartment building denied

But first, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and humid. High: 79 Low: 64.

Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. It's one thing to be an Oceanside native, but quite another to trace your family's roots back over a century, like the Magaña family, who recently celebrated 116 years in Oceanside. The family is among the settlers from the Eastside community whose rich history reaches back to the early 1900s. "The Oceanside Historical Society has made it one of its missions to learn and preserve the neighborhood's deep history. Angelina Cruz Magaña is a longtime Eastside resident and at 96 years old still has a sharp memory of her upbringing and her husband's deep Eastside ties. At the age of 18, Cruz Magaña made Oceanside home by working on a farm, and never did she think the man she would marry and the job she would take would end up becoming local history." (NBC San Diego)
  2. The controversial South Morro Hills project has reduced the original number of planned homes, following the settlement of two lawsuits. The Oceanside City Council first approved Integral Communities' North River Farms development in late 2019 with a proposal to build 585 homes on 214 acres of land. Now, the number of homes has been reduced to 395 homes. The revised plan preserves more agricultural and open space while the development will only take up 28 acres on the property. (Coast News)
  3. 21-year-old Michael Anthony Carmichael of Oceanside was sentenced Tuesday for posing as a sheriff's deputy. Carmichael was arrested in June after a patrol deputy spotted him conducting what appeared to be a traffic stop, according to sheriff's officials. "The sheriff's department said Carmichael was believed to have stopped at least 10 other drivers in Bonsall, Fallbrook and Oceanside, beginning in August 2021. A search of Carmichael's home turned up additional paraphernalia, including replica guns, that could be used to impersonate a deputy, police officer or security guard, according to sheriff's officials. Carmichael pleaded guilty to two felony counts of impersonating an officer and evading arrest." (Patch)
  4. A 67-year-old Oceanside man has died after a two-vehicle collision on Valley Center Road on Tuesday. "For reasons still under investigation, the driver veered across the eastbound lane and collided with the guard rail and partially collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck. CHP, VC Fire and paramedics responded to the scene to assist the driver. The driver was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The investigation is ongoing, and CHP is asking anyone who has information or may have witnessed this incident to contact the Oceanside Area CHP office at (760) 643-3400." (Valley Roadrunner)
  5. The Oceanside Planning Commission has again denied a proposal to build a six-story apartment building near the downtown Sprinter train station. "The commission voted against the Breeze Luxury Apartments project on August 22, when one commissioner called it 'hideous' and others said the apartments would not be luxurious or breezy." They also raised traffic, transportation and environmental issues. "It's a little disingenuous to the public to reconsider the project" after the commission previously voted against it, said Commissioner Jeff Symons, who supported the proposal in August. He said that despite his earlier vote, the commission should stick with the decision it made at its previous meeting. The Planning Commission's decision is final unless it's appealed to the Oceanside City Council. (Subscription/San Diego Union-Tribune)
