Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The proposed North River Farms development in South Morro Hills was scaled back to 395 homes instead of the 585 homes approved by the Oceanside City Council in 2019, under a settlement announced this week. The agreement also requires the developer to provide up to $200,000 to complete wildfire and evacuation safety enhancements and the project will be built as one of the region's first all-electric communities, with enough solar panels to meet all its needs. The agreement also extends the environmental mitigation required for the greenhouse gases produced to 50 years instead of the 30 years originally proposed. (San Diego-Union-Tribune)
  2. Congrats to Oceanside farmer Neil Nagata for recently being named Farmer of the Year by the San Diego County Farm Bureau (SDCFB). Nagata is a third-generation farmer and leading agriculture advocate for both growers and farm workers. He is president of Nagata Bros Farms, with over 30 years' experience in fresh fruit, vegetable and strawberry substrate/hydroponic production and research. He also grows blueberries, blackberries, and cherimoya. In addition to his growing experience, Nagata is an expert in many aspects of agriculture and biological science, including field and commercial research and production. (Coast News)
  3. The Oceanside Museum of Art is highlighting the last 25 years with a 'Legacy' exhibit. "Legacy: 25 Years of Art and Community" is a survey of artwork from the museum's past exhibitions set in two shows: "The Early Years," currently on display and spans from 1997 to 2011, and "The Recent Years" from 2012 to 2021, which opens Oct. 1. Out of the museum's more than 300 exhibits, the "Legacy" exhibit features pieces from 71 exhibits with more than 112 artists. (Coast News)
  4. A Vista man was sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to taking more than $300,000 in unemployment benefits intended for those who'd lost work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Darris Cotton, 30, submitted at least 16 false applications for benefits by using other people's names, dates of birth and social security numbers, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. The U.S. Attorney's Office says Cotton also submitted fraudulent applications in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Arizona and used the stolen funds he received to buy "luxury items such as Gucci backpacks."
