Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. On the red carpet at 11th Annual Oceanside International Film Festival. It's an international film festival but full of local talent. Lou Niles, the festival's executive director, shares the details including a cameo from local comic Vicki Barbolak. (CBS8)
  2. U.S. Representative Mike Levin (D-CA) recognized Cynthia and W.B. May, veterans and owners of Cynthia's Artistic Expressions in Oceanside, as the Constituents of the Month for February. Cynthia and her husband are both Navy veterans of the Gulf War, and after leaving the military they realized they needed an outlet to express themselves and help manage post-traumatic stress and anxiety. They opened Cynthia's Artistic Expressions as a therapeutic and healing space for those struggling with mental or emotional health challenges, and they have also contributed to the community by hosting food drives for servicemembers, making art accessible at local vet centers and retirement homes, and much more. 3. The senior enlisted leader of Camp Pendleton-based I Marine Expeditionary Force was relieved of his duties Tuesday by I MEF commanding general Lt. Gen. George Smith, the Marines said in a statement. Sgt. Maj. Terrence Whitcomb, a 28-year Marine Corps veteran, was relieved "due to loss of trust and confidence in his abilities to fulfill his assigned duties," the statement said. He assumed the role of sergeant major for I MEF in May, according to his Marine Corps biography, after serving in the same role at the 1st Marine Division — also on Camp Pendleton. The sergeant major is an advisor to the commanding general of the Marine Expeditionary Force. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  4. Succulent Cafe will make its comeback this year at the site of The Brick Hotel in Oceanside. The open-air cafe closed its original Oceanside location back in 2020 but is still in operation in Carlsbad Village. It'll join the likes of Grind and Prosper Hospitality Group's new restaurant concepts, Q&A Restaurant and Oyster Bar, and CocoCabana. The Brick Hotel site has been working on its transformation from a historic 1800s-era building to a 10-room boutique hotel. (What Now San Diego)
  5. California Democrats have introduced legislation that would tax what the measure calls "extreme wealth" in California. Proposed Feb. 16, Assembly bill 2289 would apply to households worth more than $50 million. That represents about 0.07 percent of the state, or about 15,000 families. Researchers at UC Berkeley and UC Davis in 2021 said such legislation would raise about $22.3 billion a year starting in 2023. About half of that money would come from the roughly 170 or so billionaires who call California home. (Sacramento Patch)
