Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- The Nissan Super Girl Surf Pro is back this weekend at the Oceanside Pier. This year's lineup includes Olympic gold medalist Carissa Moore, Olympic teammate Caroline Marks who won last year's Super Girl title, surf icon Bethany Hamilton and local surfer Samantha Sibley, who became the youngest champion of the competition in 2019. Super Girl also offers plenty of entertainment with live concerts and family-friendly activities. The competition's concert series will include performances by Spin Doctors, Smash Mouth, Hoobastank, The Expendables and Kira Kosarin. (Coast News)
- The median price of a single-family home in San Diego County dropped by 5.0% in August to $910,000, but the number of sales increased, the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors reported Wednesday. Prices have fallen since the peak of $1 million in April, but are still 7.1% above the $850,000 median price recorded in August 2021. Local Realtors reported 1,564 homes sold in August, an increase of 14.7% from July but down 30.5% from the same month a year ago. The most expensive San Diego County single-family property sold in August was a newly built estate in Rancho Santa Fe. The 11,622-square-foot two-story property sold for $16.6 million. (Patch)
- A looming national freight railroad strike is expected to affect commuter rail traffic in the Golden State. California residents who planned cross-country trips by Amtrak may already be feeling the effects of the dispute between the nation's major railroads and their unions. Amtrak said it will only operate trains that it can ensure will reach their final destination before 12:01 a.m. Friday — when the strike would begin if there is no agreement. In Southern California, Metrolink says portions of its lines through Orange County, the Inland Empire and Ventura counties could see a partial or complete service cancellation. (Patch)
- A naked man who authorities believe to be the owner of a vehicle retrieved from a ravine was rescued from a cliff in Torrey Pines Wednesday and taken to a hospital. San Diego Fire & Rescue crews found a man who reportedly could not walk due to injuries suffered after falling from a cliff near the Torrey Pines Gliderport at around 3:15 a.m. Crews used a pulley system to crank the victim from the cliffside, and he was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital with serious leg injuries.
