Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. San Diego County crime log: Here's a look at some of this week's police, fire and courtroom stories from across the county: A pedestrian was killed by a vehicle on Mission Avenue in Oceanside. A body was found in the Tijuana River near the U.S.-Mexico border. A man is suspected of kidnapping a toddler from a North County home. An inmate has died after being found unresponsive in a cell at George Bailey. A man pleads guilty to hitting multiple people with a vehicle in Carlsbad. A man has been accused of gunning down his mother in Pacific Beach. (Patch)
  2. After months of controversy surrounding Oceanside's treasury department, an internal investigation into claims made against elected City Treasurer Victor Roy has revealed that only three of the allegations could be substantiated. The report released Thursday found that Roy violated some of the city's codes of ethics and conduct, as well as its personnel rules and regulations and recommended that the city discipline or retrain him. "The allegations concerning the city treasurer were promptly and thoroughly investigated by an impartial, independent investigator," City Manager Jonathan Borrego said in a statement. "That investigation is now complete and the report, which speaks for itself, has been publicly released. The city accepts the conclusions reached by the investigator and will implement the recommendations." (Voice of San Diego)
  3. The Pilgrim Creek Estates mobile home community in Oceanside says fire insurance went up 800%. The community is made up of 200 homes with many on fixed incomes and seniors. Now the entire community must pay $160,000 for insurance to cover their HOA amenities. Residents say the insurance company for the HOA American Alternative Insurance Company dropped them because they are considered to be a fire risk. Homeowners across the state and in San Diego have been faced with the issue of insurance companies canceling policies citing fire risk. Last week CDI Commissioner Lara submitted his Safer from Wildfires Regulation Plan, which requires insurance companies give discounts to policy holders for fire mitigation. (CBS News 8)
  4. San Diego County's unemployment rate increased to 3.4% in August, up from a revised 3.1% in July, according to the latest figures released by the state Employment Development Department. August's unemployment rate was considerably less than August 2021's rate of 6.5%. Last month's rates compare with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 4.1% for California and 3.8% for the nation during the same period. According to the EDD, between July and August, nonfarm employment increased by 6,600 jobs, from 1,509,300 to 1,515,900. Agricultural jobs increased by 200 month-over-month. (Patch)
