Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- A severe thunderstorm warning for parts of southeastern San Diego County was issued on Wednesday. The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a severe thunderstorm warning with 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail expected. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Torrential rainfall may occur with this storm and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. For updates and locations that will experience life-threatening thunderstorms please go to the National Weather Service. (County of San Diego)
- The Oceanside Harbor and Beaches Advisory Committee has approved a plan to have lifeguards assume safety services that are currently handled by the police department at the Oceanside Harbor. The city's fire and police departments have been working with harbor officials since 2020 on the proposed change as a way to save money and provide better service to boaters, businesses and more than 900 slip renters at the harbor and marina. The plan will go to the Oceanside City Council for approval at its September 28 meeting. If approved the plan would take effect in 2023. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
- The saga over Oceanside's city treasurer has taken a new twist with questions arising about Oceanside Treasury Manager Steve Hodges, the employee that alleged misdeeds by the elected city treasurer Victor Roy. Public records reveal that Hodges, who is tasked with managing Oceanside's $500 million investment portfolio was previously convicted of felony burglary for stealing the city's credit card and thousands of dollars from Home Depot as part of a gift card scam as a teen. Hodges is still employed but has plans to resign later this year, according to city officials. (Voice of San Diego)
- The San Diego Zoo Safari Park in northern San Diego County has welcomed a baby southern white rhino. The male calf was born Aug. 6 at the Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center at the park in Escondido. The calf was conceived through natural breeding and was born to first-time mom Livia and dad J Gregory. Safari Park staff said the calf is "healthy, confident and full of energy." The birth is part of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's Northern White Rhino Initiative, which is dedicated to saving the northern white rhino, a distant relative of the southern white rhino. There are only two northern white rhinos alive in the world and both are female. (Patch)
