Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. The recent storm brought record rainfall to Oceanside Harbor, with over 4 inches of rain reported over the past few days, one of the highest totals recorded in San Diego County. That's crazy, considering the previous record was a paltry 0.6 inches set in 1982. The deluge also caused several road closures in Oceanside and around the county. While we all wish the rain would go away, a slight chance of rain is forecast for Friday through Sunday, and even more is expected next week. (Patch)
  2. A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle and killed Tuesday on Douglas Drive near Madra Lane in Oceanside. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter, after police conducted a field sobriety test. "'The victim was riding either on the sidewalk or on the street when he was struck by the vehicle, which was driven by an Oceanside resident,' said police spokesperson Jennifer Atenza. She said the driver admitted to having used heroin." The identity of the man who was killed while riding his bike was not released. (San Diego Union-Tribune / paywall)
  3. Westbound State Route 78 is closed due to flooding between El Camino Real and College Boulevard through Saturday. A sinkhole opened on the roadway Wednesday after a 50-year-old culvert failed, resulting in Caltrans shutting down the highway to make emergency repairs. "So, this work would normally take 3 to 4 weeks to perform," Caltrans Maintenance Chief Shawn Rizzutto said. "We are going to do it in less than a week. We're going to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week until we get it fully open." County storm closure info is at www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/dpw/roads/EmergencyUpdate.html.
