Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Oceanside is no stranger to the homeless problem that has grown worse throughout our area. That's why it came as no surprise when the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to declare homelessness a public health crisis. The declaration will direct the county chief administrative officer to work with city governments and the Regional Task Force on Homelessness on a regional approach to tackling the issue. Supervisor Jim Desmond said he was glad to see a region-wide approach, but said much work is needed to tackle the crisis. "If we don't deal with it, there's going to be greater cost in the future," Desmond added. (Patch)
  2. Future Stitch plans to recruit and employ formerly incarcerated women for its new manufacturing facility on Airport Road in Oceanside. Founder Taylor Shupe hopes to demonstrate to other companies that hiring formerly incarcerated employees is profitable for everyone involved. Since the facility opened, Future Stitch has worked with San Diego Workforce Partners and North County Lifeline to recruit formerly incarcerated women as employees. (Coast News)
  3. A man who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter of 77-year-old Oceanside resident John Roth, was sentenced to 12 years this month. Carey Reid, who turned 25 this month, made a plea deal and admitted that he stabbed John Roth to death while he was sleeping on his couch four years ago. Defendant Reid never spoke during his trial or his sentencing hearing. The widow of the deceased man made a victim's impact statement before sentencing was announced. "Send this monster murderer to big jail. We stop him from being on the street to do this to more families," she told the judge. (San Diego Reader)
  4. Don't sweat it, Oceanside. Although extreme heat is in the forecast again, San Diego County offers relief at nearly 100 Cool Zones available throughout the region. The National Weather Service has put an excessive heat watch in effect through Wednesday evening. To find the nearest Cool Zone, you can enter an address on the map and it will show several Cool Zones near you. You can also call 2-1-1 to request information about Cool Zones or schedule a free ride to a Cool Zone if you don't have access to transportation. (Press Release Desk)
