Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Get a taste of New Orleans at this newly opened restaurant named after executive chef Quinnton Austin. The Q&A Restaurant & Oyster Bar opened last month inside The Brick Hotel, bringing inspired NOLA eats for Oceansider's to sample. To accompany the oysters is a delectable menu of classics like crawfish etouffe, gumbo, seafood crepes and even collard greens and jambalaya. Q&A delivers a New Orleans-style fine dining experience in an intimate space that feels friendly and homey. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. Column: New group of honorees joining Oceanside High Hall of Fame. It's gotten to be that Oceanside High School is inducting second-generation members into its Hall of Fame.
At public ceremonies at 10 a.m. on Oct. 8, David Meyer (and six other inductees) will join his dad, Herb Meyer (honored in the first group in 2006), as Hall of Fame members. The hall was created that year in recognition of the school's 100th anniversary. The only previous two-generation inductee was the late Jerrell Bussey, honored in 2015. His daughter, Susan (Bussey) Shimanoff, was a member of that original 2006 group. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  3. It's raining doggies at the San Diego County Department of Animal Services. Due to the Border 32 Fire, the county's Bonita and Carlsbad shelters took in 67 dogs and 10 cats as well as 34 other animals. Most of the animals who are available for adoption can be adopted for no fee, including many dogs and cats that have been there for a long time. If you cannot adopt but have some room at home for a temporary roommate, consider fostering a pet. (Press Release Desk)
  4. The San Diego County Registrar of Voters is seeking poll workers for the Nov. 8 Statewide General Election. Poll workers play an essential role in elections and can serve their community while earning $16 per hour. Under the Voter's Choice Act, vote centers replace traditional polling places. Vote centers are open throughout the county for an extended period before Election Day. Rather than a single day of service, poll workers are now needed to staff vote centers up to 11 days in the two weeks before Election Day. (Press Release Desk)
  5. Pumpkin spice isn't just for coffee drinks, food and candles. It's in deodorant, SPAM, ramen and cheese — and that's just the short list. A search yielded 10,000 results for pumpkin spiced products on Amazon. Even if you don't want pumpkin spice flavors in foods, you can use it to freshen your vacuum cleaner bag, the air around you and the counters you prep meals on. Dogs aren't left out. Greenies offers pumpkin spice flavor dog treats. The Honest Kitchen pet food company has a full line of pumpkin spice treats for cats and dogs. Celebrate fall and explore the many weird and wild pumpkin spice products.(Patch)
