Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- Home prices throughout San Diego County dipped for the first time this year as mortgage rates climbed. June's median home price in San Diego County was $825,000, down from the all-time high of $850,000 reached the previous month, said CoreLogic/DQNews on Tuesday. An Oceanside one bed, one bath condo went on the market for $675,000 in May but is now down to $624,800. Prices in the region had been on the rise since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, when the median home price was $590,000. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
- More than five Camp Pendleton Marines per year died by suicide over the past five years. At least 20 took their lives in the barracks and another four during training exercises. An investigation by Voice of San Diego shows deadly mental health problems have been affecting the base for years. At least 31 Marines, aged 18 – 25, died by suicide at Camp Pendleton between 2015 and 2020, according to San Diego County death records analyzed by Voice. Naval Base San Diego is home to almost as many troops as Camp Pendleton but has not experienced nearly as many suicides. (Voice of San Diego)
- The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County dropped Tuesday for the 34th consecutive day, decreasing 2.8 cents to $5.85, its lowest amount since May 10. The average price has decreased 52.3 cents during the streak, including eight-tenths of a cent Monday, according to figures from the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. It is 19 cents less than one week ago and 49.5 cents lower than one month ago, but $1.543 more than one year ago. The streak of decreases follows a run of 19 increases in 20 days totaling 35.5 cents. (City News Service)
- San Diego Gas & Electric residential customers will receive $64.17 in bill credits on both their August and September electric bills as part of the California Climate Credit program, it was announced Tuesday. According to the utility company, there is no action required to receive the credits. All electricity customers will automatically receive the credits in their August and September billing cycles. (Times of San Diego)
- Sephora beauty products are now available at two more Kohl's stores in San Diego County, including Chula Vista and Oceanside. Each space features 2,500 square feet of beauty experience that the company said "mimics the look and feel" of a standalone Sephora store. Grand opening celebrations are slated for Wednesday at both stores. The locations in Chula Vista and Oceanside are two of 400 Sephora at Kohl's store openings planned nationwide this year. (Patch)
