Two event-filled days of sun, sand, and surf to experience fun activities such as a kid's costume party at Capt'n Junebug's Kids Zone where they'll meet local pirates and mermaids. Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. The city of Oceanside is preparing to open its first year-round homeless shelter to address the homeless crisis in Oceanside and to mitigate community impacts. A property was purchased, construction costs were approved, and an operating agreement was signed with the San Diego Rescue Mission for the "Oceanside Navigation Center" at the centrally-located 3131 Oceanside Boulevard property. Property improvements are underway; internal demolition is nearly complete and site furnishings have begun to arrive. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. A motorcycle collided with an empty horse trailer being hauled by a pickup truck in Oceanside Wednesday, leaving the motorcyclist dead. The 20-year-old man was riding a Suzuki motorcycle in a middle lane on Interstate 5 near Las Pulgas Road at 12:39 a.m. Wednesday when, for unknown reasons, he crashed into the trailer hauled by a Ford pickup driven by a 29-year-old man, according to the California Highway Patrol. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup driver was uninjured, the CHP reported. (Patch)
  3. Hot Wheels Skate™ will host Demo Days at the Walmart Supercenter (2100 Vista Way) in Oceanside on August 20. The free, family-friendly event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. On-site attractions include skate clinics, photo opportunities, product giveaways, fingerboarding demos and autograph sessions with Nitro Circus pros such as Noah Lora, Nick Hall and Beaver Fleming.   4. San Diego County Supervisors have approved language to add a marijuana ballot measure on the November ballot for taxing retail marijuana businesses in unincorporated areas. Five marijuana operations are allowed to operate in the county — three in Ramona and one each in areas bordering El Cajon and Escondido. (Patch)
  5. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County dropped Wednesday for the 62nd time in 63 days since rising to a record, decreasing 1.3 cents to $5.327, its lowest amount since March 6. The average price has decreased $1.046 since rising to a record $6.373 on June 15, including 1.1 cents Tuesday, according to figures from the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. It is 6.1 cents less than one week ago and 55.9 cents lower than one month ago, but 96.8 cents more than one year ago. The average price dropped for 59 consecutive days, rose one-tenth of a cent Sunday and resumed declining Monday. In Oceanside, the price of gas has fallen even further with prices as low as $4.85 a gallon according to GasBuddy. (Patch)
