Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Greenbrier Village, a 60-unit apartment building to lift people from homelessness, will get $2.2 million from Oceanside's share of federal American Rescue Act funds. Construction of the $25.8 million project is expected to begin later this year. About $16 million of the funding will come from the private sector, the rest from government grants and loans. Located on Greenbrier Drive near Oceanside Boulevard and Interstate 5, Greenbrier Village will be the first supportive housing project of its kind in North County for people who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  2. Mother's Day this year falls on Sunday, May 8. For those planning to treat Mom and the family to a lavish brunch or dinner feast, check out Patch's annual restaurant guide to Mother's Day on-site dining specials and takeout deals throughout the San Diego region. Do note that some specials run all weekend, and others may require reservations or advance ordering. So don't delay! (San Diego Patch)
  3. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography reported that dense phytoplankton blooms — popularly known as "red tides" — have become more visible throughout Southern California this week. Blooms have been spotted in La Jolla, Newport Beach and Santa Barbara. Researchers with the cooperative Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System are monitoring the blooms. Scripps said oceanographers don't know exactly how long these blooms will last but will provide updates as they learn more. (Times of San Diego)
  4. Multiple candidates are vying for the 49th Congressional District seat, one of them being Christopher Rodriguez, who recently released a new campaign ad positioning himself as the Marine who can come in and bring about change if he is elected over "The Empty Suits" currently in office, referring to Brian Maryott and Mike Levin. Republican candidate Rodriguez joined KUSI's Jason Austell on "Good Morning San Diego" to discuss the details of his run for office. (KUSI)
  5. San Diego International Airport recorded only 0.02 inches of rain during April, leaving the city 2.81 inches below average in seasonal precipitation and helping push the region closer to being declared in a severe drought by federal forecasters. Such a ranking could mean that San Diego County will end up beginning wildfire season in early summer rather than closer to fall. The airport averages 0.65 inches of rain in April. Oceanside is also critically dry. The city's airport has recorded 7.15 inches of precipitation since the rainy season began on October 1. That's 4.08 inches below average.
