Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Enjoy the reprieve from the rain these last couple of days, because it's coming back for the weekend. The recent parade of storm systems flooded streets, knocked down trees, caused mudslides and led to widespread devastation across the state, including the loss of at least 19 people's lives. With at least two more atmospheric rivers bound for California, the next break is not expected until the middle of next week. Sadly, officials say the recent deluge will not end the drought, because it's hard to store so much rainfall in such a short time and much of it just ends up in the ocean as storm runoff. (Patch)
  2. Looking for ways to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend? Join in the MLK Day of Service with the North San Diego County NAACP, MiraCosta College Service Learning and CSUSM's Service Learning and Civic Engagement for a day of volunteerism and service to our communities. On Monday, the City of Oceanside is joining the NSDC NAACP Branch #1086 to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Community Prayer Breakfast at the El Corazon Center. Also, a reminder that city and county offices will be closed on Monday, January 16, 2023, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. (County News Center)
  3. Oceanside High School makes the list from Esquire magazine as one of the top 12 "Most Unforgettable School Sets In Movies And TV." The hit TV show Veronica Mars first aired in 2004 and starred Kristen Bell as the fictional teen sleuth. Fans may recall the picturesque Neptune High that she attended, which in fact was our very own OHS. (Esquire)
  4. A North County student was arrested for allegedly bringing a gun to school. The Alta Vista High school student, who was identified as 18-year-old Eduardo Soto, pushed a school staff member that tried to question him on Wednesday because he appeared intoxicated. Security found a ghost gun and liquor when they searched Soto. He was booked into the Vista county jail on multiple charges. (Patch)
