Here are the top four stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- The housing market has cooled down significantly across the Golden State, causing anxiety amongst sellers. The median sale price for homes in California dropped from April's $840,000 to $814,000 in June, according to data from Redfin. Homeowners have been forced to cut down asking prices and set aside goals of sky-high profits. Potential buyers have also shown signs of hesitation amid economic uncertainty tied to the possibility of a recession. At the same time, rents are still rising in the Golden State. San Diego saw a rent increase of 25.85 percent and Newport Beach saw a 26.79 percent spike, according to the report. (Patch)
- A forklift was stolen from a Home Depot in Oceanside Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
A Home Depot employee told FOX 5 that a person driving in the vicinity of the store saw someone operating the forklift on a nearby road and called the store to report it. Employees immediately checked the back of the store where the forklifts are parked and found one machine missing. The stolen forklift is described as seven feet tall, yellow and black, and has "Yale" written on the side. There is no surveillance video of the theft and no description of the suspect, according to police. (FOX 5) - U.S. Marine Major Tom Schueman and Zainullah Zaki formed a close bond while working together in Afghanistan. Their new book "Always Faithful: A Story of the War in Afghanistan, the Fall of Kabul, and the Unshakable Bond Between a Marine and an Interpreter" details how their bond forged in war grew stronger during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal a year ago. Published earlier this month, and told in alternating chapters from the viewpoints of the two men, the book offers a deeply personal look at war and its aftermath — the idealism, the danger, the lingering physical and moral injuries. Much of the book involves the 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment out of Camp Pendleton, known as the Darkhorse Marines. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
