  1. Patch has your complete guide to Independence Day fireworks shows, parades and other celebrations in and around Oceanside. Fourth of July concerts, runs, parades, festivals and fireworks are planned for the July 4th holiday weekend throughout San Diego County. Plus, Oceanside Celebrates its 134th Birthday on July 3!   2. Fifteen beach areas across San Diego County offered fantastic conditions for swimmers, while Baja California’s Playa Blanca and the Tijuana Slough were ranked as two of the most polluted beaches in the region, according to Heal the Bay’s annual report Wednesday. Heal the Bay’s Beach Report Card included 15 beaches in San Diego County on its “Honor Roll List” for perfect water quality grades. The local beaches that made the Honor Roll were located in Del Mar, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs, Mission Beach and La Jolla. (Times of San Diego)
  3. Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego Tuesday began administering COVID-19 vaccines to children from 6 months to 5 years old, numerous outlets report. The hospital is not the only place in the county administering the Pfizer and Moderna shots following FDA authorization, but the hospital said that it is especially well-prepared. (San Diego Patch)
  4. A wildfire burned across 70 acres of open terrain in the far southern reaches of San Diego County Wednesday, blackening scores of acres and pushing into Mexico before ground and air crews gained control of the flames. The blaze — the second to break out in the same general vicinity in as many days — began spreading for unknown reasons at about 10 a.m. Tuesday near Tecate Creek in Marron Valley, east of Otay Mesa. As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, the fire burned 70 acres with 65% containment, according to Cal Fire. (San Diego Patch)
  5. A new "princess dirt pig" has arrived in San Diego. The San Diego Zoo announced the birth of a female aardvark cub last week — the first to be born at the zoo in more than 35 years. The cub, whose name has yet to be chosen, was born May 10 to parents Zola and Azaan. The cub is doing well and her mother has been both caring and attentive. (San Diego Patch)
