Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- Oceanside voters can take advantage of early voting at an additional 179 vote centers throughout San Diego County starting Saturday. That will make a total of 218 centers open for the four days leading up to and including Election Day. The hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Monday, June 6. All locations will be open again on Election Day, June 7, when voting hours change to 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can find a location near you at sdvote.com. (County of San Diego)
- A former Camp Pendleton Marine lost his recent appeal on a murder conviction after a state appellate court panel rejected it. The appeal was filed on behalf of a former Marine convicted in the slaying of a man in Long Beach. The three-justice panel concluded that Trevor Glenn Landers "manipulated a brain-damaged veteran into burglarizing and shooting the defendant's cocaine dealer. Landers and his cousin, Anthony Vigeant — who were stationed at Camp Pendleton at the time — were convicted of first-degree murder for the Sept. 9, 2007 shooting death of David Pettigrew. - The GOP sees a potential pickup in the 49th District that runs through Oceanside and as far south as Encinitas in San Diego County and as far north as Dana Point in Orange County. Rep. Mike Levin, a Democrat, is seeking another term but after recent redistricting has only a slight Democratic registration edge. A handful of Republicans are fighting for the slot to challenge him in November: Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett; Oceanside Councilman Christopher Rodriguez; and former San Juan Capistrano Mayor and businessman Brian Maryott. (KPBS)
- The Top Gun: Maverick movie pumped more than $150 million into California's economy. The first Top Gun highlighted San Diego spots like Kansas City Barbecue and the Top Gun house in Oceanside. California's film and tax credit program helped motivate moviemakers to come back to shoot the second movie. (CBS News 8)
- Oceanside is facing a lifeguard shortage leaving some beaches less staffed. The problem is happening throughout coastal cities around San Diego County. The Oceanside Fire Department said some of the lifeguard towers have to close when there isn't enough staff. "We try to make it as safe as possible. However, once the shortage, we can't just put anybody in a tower," said Lieutenant Emile Lagendijk, with the Oceanside Fire Department. The agency tries to have 40 guards a day for its 16 towers but said it is down 12 lifeguards. (FOX 5 San Diego)

Are you an Oceanside-Camp Pendleton resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
