Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. The City of Oceanside announced some "Historic Improvements" thanks to Measure X revenue, the 1/2 cent sales tax passed in 2018. The Fire Department unveiled its newly constructed state-of-the-art Fire Training Tower at 110 Jones Road. A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the new Fire Station 1 Project site at 602 Civic Center Drive. The revenue from the 1/2 cent tax helps fund public safety, road repairs, improved infrastructure and addressing homelessness. (City of Oceanside)
  2. Donate blood during the month of August in San Diego County for a chance to win free gas for a year. The American Red Cross blood supply has dropped nearly 20 percent in recent weeks due to a decline in blood and platelet donations, the organization announced. To prevent a blood shortage, the Red Cross is hosting blood drives across San Diego County and offering incentives for donors. Donors will also receive a $10 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice. (San Diego Patch)
  3. San Diego County adults looking for a more traditional vaccine against COVID-19 are now able to get Novavax, the County Health and Human Services Agency announced last week. Novavax, which is currently being used around the world, is now available in the region, county health officials said. Novavax has been authorized as a two-dose primary series, given three to eight weeks apart, to people ages 18 and older. (Press Release Desk)
  4. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County dropped Monday for the 47th consecutive day since rising to a record, decreasing four-tenths of a cent to $5.568, its lowest amount since March 8. The average price has dropped 80.5 cents since rising to a record $6.373 on June 15, including 1.1 cents Sunday, according to figures from the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. It is 13 cents less than one week ago and 66.4 cents lower than one month ago, but $1.227 more than one year ago. The average in Oceanside has decreased even more with prices as low as $5.05 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. (San Diego Patch)
  5. The "Stuff the Bus" school supplies drive for students experiencing homelessness in San Diego County has been extended through Aug. 31. The effort, spearheaded by the San Diego County Office of Education and San Diego County Credit Union, has raised more than $38,000 to date with a goal of $100,000. The campaign was initially slated to end July 31. A portion of donations will also assist San Diego Youth Services in providing meals for homeless youth through its various food programs.
