Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- Veteran Eduardo Arriola is accused of shooting and killing neighbor Devon Rideout while she was walking her puppy outside of her Oceanside apartment in 2018. The revolver he used was legally purchased from a local gun store. A groundbreaking set of lawsuits have been filed on behalf of a local Navy mother who says that state and federal officials allowed a mentally ill veteran to legally purchase a gun that he allegedly used to murder her daughter. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
- When Stephen Poovey and his wife, Brett, were out for a date night in Oceanside, California, they stumbled upon a forgotten 1940s motel right on the Pacific Coast Highway. Instead of seeing it for what it was, they saw the possibilities and transformed it into a modern boutique hotel, The Green Room Hotel, melding together its historic bungalow architecture with a modern yet laidback surf vibe the area has today. (Travel + Leisure)
- Earlier this month, World War II veteran Charlie Kohler made it to a major milestone in his life and he celebrated his 100th birthday. "I made it through a tough time of my life, the war years and getting out of that it was a job, and we did it and here I am 100 years old, it went so fast," remembered Charlie. A member of the 23rd regiment of the 4th Marine Division, Charlie was stationed at Camp Pendleton during his training. It was there that the members of his company made a promise to each other: that the last two men alive, would find each other later in life, enjoy a bottle of wine together and toast to those who died before them. - A local mother has been on the hunt to clear her legally blind son's name after the former Oceanside student was labeled the aggressor in a school fight that resulted in two stabbing victims. According to police and media reports, a fight broke out between several female students as school was let out at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 20, 2021, at Oceanside High School in a campus parking lot just west of Interstate 5 on North Horne Street at Mission Avenue. - U.S. Marines were blasting explosives in the Cleveland National Forest near the site of a wildfire that broke out Wednesday morning southeast of Los Angeles, military and forest officials said Thursday. The cause of the blaze, dubbed the Jim Fire, is under investigation.
A second blaze, the San Juan Fire, that sparked in the forest Thursday was quickly brought under control, but the Ortega Highway was closed in both directions as crews and air tankers fought two blazes on a dry, gusty day. (Desert Sun)
