Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The parents of Nicole Sinkule must relive the horrific killing of their daughter each time the convicted murderer seeks his freedom. On October 16, 2005, Oceanside resident Nicole Sinkule was found brutally beaten to death in her bed by her then-boyfriend, Eric Marum. Despite admitting guilt, Marum continues to pursue every legal option to gain his freedom. Nicole's family can't get closure, can't put this tragic past behind them, and are forced to be constantly vigilant to see that justice is served for their daughter. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. The dismantling of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station continues to be a slow a frustration process for locals. Starting in 2020, Southern California Edison, the company that operated SONGS, began the physical dismantling of the facility so that the land can be returned to the U.S. Navy. The decommissioning project has been fraught with obstacles of planning and politics. The spent nuclear fuel that is currently being stored on-site cannot be removed because the federal government has failed to provide a national long-term storage facility for radioactive waste. (Coast Report)
  3. High temperatures will keep Southern California baking all week long and into next weekend, prompting the National Weather Service Sunday to issue a heat advisory for the region. "Days will be slightly hotter and nights a little warmer, with the resulting heat risk sufficient for a heat advisory for Monday through Wednesday," the NWS said. The advisory runs until 8 p.m. Wednesday, but could be extended as the current forecast calls for high heat through next Sunday in several areas. The San Diego County deserts are expected to see highs near 110 degrees through next weekend, with highs in the low 90s in the valley areas. (San Diego Patch)
  4. Took a break from the news this weekend? Not to worry, we've rounded up some of the stories you missed in SoCal on Saturday and Sunday. Violent crime and homicide rates shot up again in 2021. Vice President Kamala Harris speaking at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in SoCal emphasized the importance of November's midterm elections. The Buffalo Bills released punter Matt Araiza, days after he and two college teammates were accused in a lawsuit of raping a 17-year-old girl last year when he was a San Diego State University student.Another collared adult mountain lion was fatally struck by a vehicle north of Ojai in Ventura County, authorities said.
