Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. The Oceanside Police Department's Cold Case investigators used current technology to re-exam forensic evidence to help solve the 1994 murder of Dolores Rabaya. On January 1, 1994, at around 7:00 pm, the Oceanside Police Department received a 9-1-1 call requesting assistance at the 300 block of Edgehill Lane in Oceanside. When officers arrived they discovered Oceanside resident Dolores Rabaya deceased in her bed, covered in blood. Rabaya was found with twenty-seven stab wounds, including six wounds to her chest, five to her head and defensive wounds showing that Dolores had attempted to fight off her attacker. 2. For decades, a lot of tourists overlooked Oceanside. It was the blue-collar city that operated in the shadow of Camp Pendleton, a beach town without the frills found farther south in Del Mar and La Jolla. But maybe that reputation has reached its expiration date. It certainly feels that way now when you stand downtown, flanked by a pair of shiny new hotels, watching the sun set beyond the old wooden pier and deciding whether to eat vegan, tacos or barbecue at the weekly street fair. (Los Angeles Times)
  3. 29th Street Capital, a real estate investment firm based in Chicago, has acquired an Oceanside apartment for $97.5 million. Built in 1974, Sunterra Apartments, 3851 Sherbourne Drive, was sold by Ideal Capital Group. The complex has 240 apartments and includes a pool, two playgrounds, a sundeck with an outdoor fireplace, and a fitness center. Improvements planned by 29th Street Capital include installing stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops, oval soaking tubs, and white cabinetry. Exterior improvements will include updating the roof, wrapping balconies in wood paneling, and replacing windows and glass doors. Hunter Combs with Walker & Dunlop in San Diego brokered the transaction. (San Diego Business Journal)
  4. Earthquakes happen every day in California. Nearly all are so minor they go unnoticed. But one long-range scientific model forecasts a 6.7 magnitude will happen sometime in California in the next 12 years. Yet, the warning for a specific earthquake doesn't come more than a few seconds ahead. That means the only time to prepare for a significant earthquake is before one happens. (Press Release Desk)
  5. City of Oceanside Water Utilities employees were honored at the annual California Water Environment Association (CWEA) San Diego awards banquet. Four City employees from the San Luis Rey Wastewater Treatment Plant were appointed to the CWEA Board, while another received a prestigious award for his outstanding service and exemplary work in the maintenance field. Mike Mensing, Mechanical Technologist I, was awarded the title of Mechanical Tech of the Year for the San Diego CWEA Section. (osidenews.com)
