Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. The Junior Seau Amphitheatre in the Oceanside Pier Plaza is close to getting its first major upgrade since 1950. The Oceanside City Council is set to decide on plans for a major renovation of the pier plaza area in September after a series of public meetings. Steve Johnson of design company Johnson Favaro was brought in to advise Oceanside on plans for the Pier Plaza area that includes the bandshell, the Junior Seau Beach Community Center and a parking lot. "There is no way to spruce up this existing facility," Johnson said about the bandshell at a July 12 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting. He said that even if the council decides to keep the bandshell with its exact same look, it still must be rebuilt. (San Diego Reader)
  2. San Diego County Crime Log: A look at some of this week's police, fire and courtroom stories from across the county. A new report by SANDAG found that 83% of male detainees and 60% of female detainees tested positive for at least one illicit substance. Border Patrol agents stopped a truck on I-8 in Campo. Bundles of fentanyl pills were hidden in the vehicle's gas tank and spare tire; San Diego County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest for felony animal cruelty after a dog was found with a chain embedded in its neck. (San Diego Patch)
  3. With the rise in COVID-19 infections in San Diego County, public health officials reminded the public Friday to seek treatment to help prevent severe symptoms from the virus. Antiviral medications require a doctor's prescription and should be started within five days of developing symptoms of COVID-19. Monoclonal antibodies should be given no more than seven days after the onset of symptoms. "If you're already vaccinated, then treatment gives you extra protection, and it can reduce your risk of hospitalization or worse even if you're not," said Dr. Cameron Kaiser, county deputy public health officer. (San Diego Patch)
  4. The unemployment rate in San Diego County rose for the first time in months. However,
June's unemployment rate of 3.2% was considerably less than June 2021's rate of 7.3%. The county's unemployment rate increased from a revised 2.7% in May according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department. Last month's rates compare with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 4% for California and 3.8% for the nation during the same period. (City News Service)
