Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- The Oceanside Municipal Pier Utility Replacement Project is underway and is expected to be finished by September. The 1,942-foot-long wooden pier has undergone much wear and tear since it was last rebuilt in 1987. Most of the project's funding is from the American Rescue Plan Recovery Act and includes major water, sewage and electrical repairs that should last for decades and make future improvements easier. Much of the pier has remained empty since Ruby's Diner closed in 2021 but new plans include a "family-friendly seafood restaurant" and a "snack shack" kiosk by local restaurateurs Jessica and Davin Waite, owners of Shootz Fish & Beer, The Plot and Wrench & Rodent. (North Coast Current)
- Oceanside students and young adults can ride public transit free of charge, after San Diego County supervisors voted to expand a free ridership program for county residents ages 18 to 24. Supervisor Nora Vargas said in her State of the County speech, "it's important the county does everything it can to remove barriers for underserved communities." More information about the Youth Opportunity Pass and where to pick up a free youth PRONTO card is at www.sandag.org. (Patch)
- A new exhibit by Robert Xavier Burden opens at the Oceanside Museum of Art this weekend. The "Relics" exhibit features 30 paintings ranging in size from 30×30 inches up to 8×14 feet. Each took from 1,300 up to 2,100 hours to paint. The artwork is inspired by themes from Burden's childhood, including "animals with super-human characteristics found in films and TV and serves as a reflection on the plastic culture that is killing them." The show explores the "tension between imagination and reality" and will be on display through June 4. (There San Diego)
