Hey, neighbors. It's Thursday in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton and I'm back in your inbox with everything you need to know about what's happening in town, including news about:

  • Pier Utility Replacement Project updating fire and water services
  • Oceanside man pleads guilty of threatening Sen. Chuck Schumer
  • Avocados dropped out of the top 10 crops in San Diego county

But first, today's weather:

Turning sunny; humid. High: 75 Low: 63.

Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Oceanside is moving forward on repairs for utilities at the Pier. "The city has hired Jilk Heavy Construction for nearly $5.6 million to replace outdated utilities on the downtown pier. Utilities at the pier, such as potable water, wastewater, natural gas, electrical and communications networks, have reached the end of a 35-year lifetime after operating in a harsh marine environment. The Pier Utility Replacement Project will replace and separate fire and domestic water services. Additionally, the project will replace electrical structure for lighting and replace three sewer lift stations and a force main. The project will take approximately 11 months with an anticipated completion date in September 2023. During the construction period, Parking Lot 29 will be closed for construction staging and utility replacement on land." (Coast News)
  2. An Oceanside man has admitted to threatening to kill Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York in a voicemail. "Johnathan Ryan McGuire was charged with sending a profane message to the Democratic Senate majority leader in which he threatened to 'blow your (expletive) head off' and 'send some bullets your way,' according to an FBI agent's affidavit filed in San Diego federal court." "The affidavit also alleges that U.S. Capitol Police have documented 'numerous threats by McGuire to various members of U.S. Congress and a USCP officer' between 2019 and 2021, which were allegedly sent by phone and email. McGuire pleaded guilty Wednesday in San Diego federal court to one count of threats in interstate commerce and is due for sentencing in January. The count carries a maximum possible penalty of five years in prison." (NBC7 San Diego)
  3. The Oceanside Harbor Police recently helped free an entangled humpback whale. "On Sept. 26, a SeaWorld San Diego Rescue team responded to a report of a humpback whale spotted tangled in gear and went to work trying to free the whale from the gear painfully wrapped around its body. SeaWorld San Diego Rescue, NOAA, the Oceanside Harbor Police Department, California State Parks, and Del Mar Lifeguards all worked together to safely relocate the entangled whale to the waters of San Elijo State Park." (PEOPLE)
  4. There's a new top crop and for the first time in years, avocados aren't even in the top 10. "San Diego County has a new top crop, while agricultural value exceeded $1.75 billion, according to the county's Crop Report released Wednesday. The report, which covers the 2021 growing season, showed that crop and commodity values fell for the first time from the previous year since 2018, by nearly 3.2% from $1.8 billion. Avocados dropped out of the top-10 crops for the first time since 2003." So, what's the new top crop in the county for 2021? "Bedding Plants, Color & Perennials, Cacti & Succulents, which ranked second in the previous two crop reports," and replaced Ornamental Trees and Shrubs, which had been in the number-one spot the previous 12 years.
